U političkoj znanosti u svijetu stalno se raspravlja o povijesti discipline, pa je ta povijest postalo njezino posebno područje ili grana. Nasuprot tome, u hrvatskoj političkoj znanosti dugo se nije kritički raspravljalo o povijesti discipline, kao ni o „stanju discipline“ danas. To je tim čudnije što je hrvatska politička znanost - kao rijetko koja nacionalna disciplina te vrste u svijetu - potkraj prošlog stoljeća bila suočena s najdubljim političkim i društvenim lomovima koje je moguće zamisliti: sa slomom staroga državnog, staroga političkog i staroga društvenog poretka, te s uspostavom nove države, novog političkog i društvenog sustava, a sve to u ratnome ili poluratnom stanju u zemlji. Takvi fundamentalni „povijesni lomovi“ nisu hrvatsku političku znanost ostavili nedirnutom, ali se i njihovu stvarnome, potencijalnom ili propuštenome utjecaju na nju uglavnom šutjelo. „Mala obljetnica“ Fakulteta političkih znanosti“, 45 godina od njegova osnutka, iskorištena je kao povod da se ta šutnja prekine i da se otvori trajnija rasprava o povijesti discipline, kao i o sadašnjemu „stanju discipline“ u komparativnoj perspektivi, onako kako se to čini u razvijenim politološkim zajednicama u svijetu.
