Zasluga je pojma sadizam što je okrutnosti dodao svijest o njoj samoj kao užitku u mučenju. Markiz de Sade postao je povlaštenim predmetom istraživanja nekih najznačajnijih modernih francuskih esejista kao što su Bataille, Blanchot, Klossovski, Barthes. Tom nizu pridružuje se pjesnikinja, esejist i polemičar Annie Le brun. U svojoj studiji o Sadeu, predgovoru njegovim sabranim djelima, autorica inzistira na skidanju naslaga interpretacija ne bi li se pred epohalnim sadizmom našeg stoljeća doprlo do pisca koji je nepoštednošću svog erotizma očistio tjelesnost svih ljaga što su joj nanijele ideologije. Izabrana su djela u kojima je Sade najdalje otišao u svom izazovu, ali je i punu pozornost posvetila Sadeovu teatru. Sumu sadizma Annie Le Brun promotrila je na širokom obzoru književnosti i filozofije te uopće na slici Francuske 18. stoljeća.
