Radnja Jamrachove menažerije smještena je u devetnaesto stoljeće. Glavni lik, dječak Jaffy Brown, nakon incidenta s odbjeglim cirkuskim tigrom odlazi raditi za Charlesa Jamracha, glasovitog uvoznika egzotičnih životinja, zajedno s dječakom Timom. Gospodin Jamrach unovačio je njih dvojicu za trogodišnju ekspediciju na oceanu i hvatanje legendarnog zmaja. Između dvojice dječaka razvija se blisko prijateljstvo ispunjeno suparništvom. Oni uživaju u grubom bratstvu mornara i brutalnom umijeću lova na kitove, a uspijevaju i uloviti zmaja. No za slab ulov kitova mornari počinju okrivljivati zvijer koja se nalazi u kavezu na brodu tvrdeći da im je donijela nesreću, a to se uvjerenje učvrsti kada velika oluja potopi brod. Plutajući oceanom, preživjeli mornari, među njima Jaffy i Tim, prisiljeni su suočiti se s vlastitim mjestom u životinjskom carstvu i okrutnošću opstanka. U najužem izboru za nagradu Man Booker 2011. i u širem izboru za nagradu Orange 2011.!
