Roman Kanaan brazilskoga klasika Joséa Pereire Da Graçe Aranhe tvori most između filozofskih i estetičkih struja s kraja 19. stoljeća (realizma, naturalizma i simbolizma) te modernističke struje druge polovine 20. stoljeća. Objavljen 1902. kao Aranhin roman prvijenac svojim socijalnim idejama snažno je uzdrmao brazilsku književnu scenu i postigao velik uspjeh i kod kritike i kod čitatelja. Opisujući novu brazilsku stvarnost, njemačke useljenike, korumpiranost vladajućih struktura, predrasude i rasizam, predstavlja novu fazu brazilskoga romana u povijesti brazilske književnosti. Prikazujući prilagođivanje njemačkih došljaka u brazilskoj sredini i sukob njemačke europske kulture sa zaostalošću u brazilskoj pokrajini Porto do Cachoeiro, pokazao je kako spomenute kategorije utječu na viđenje nacionalnosti i nacionalnog ponosa. Taj je roman, po riječima Joséa Veríssima, otkrio velikog pisca i bio je „nov u temi, nov u inspiraciji i koncepciji, i nov u stilu”. Aranhin Kanaan jedan je od najznačajnijih romana u povijesti brazilske književnosti i temeljno djelo za razumijevanje brazilske kulture.
