Trinaestogodišnji Benny Oh čuje glasove. Začuo ih je nakon pogibije svog voljenog oca, muzičara, a isprva ne shvata da zapravo čuje stvari – svoju tenu, slomljene božićne ukrase, glavicu uvele zelene salate. Mada ne razumije šta govore, Benny osjeća njihov emocionalni ton: neke su ugodne i duhovite, druge guguću, a treće su podsmješljive, ljute i pune boli. Dok njegova majka Annabelle u kući gomila problematičnu količinu svega i svačega, glasovi postaju glasniji. Benny ih pokušava ignorisati, ali ga glasovi počinju pratiti i van kuće, na ulici i u školi. Kad konačno pronađe utočište u tišini velike javne biblioteke, gdje se predmeti ponašaju pristojno i govore šapatom, Benny otkriva čudesan novi svijet. Zaljubljuje se u očaravajuću uličnu umjetnicu koja za ljubimca ima arogantnu feretku, a biblioteku koristi za svoje umjetničke performanse. Upoznaje filozofa-pjesnika Slavoja, beskućnika koji ga ohrabruje da postavlja važna pitanja i da među brojnim glasovima pronađe svoj vlastiti. I tako Benny upoznaje svoju vlastitu Knjigu – još jednu stvar koja govori. Ona pripovijeda Bennyjev život i uči ga da sluša ono što je bitno.
