Otišao sam u Egipat kao kurir, bez problema. Nekom tipu na aerodromu dao sam paket, i do podneva prvoga dana bio sam gotov i slobodan. Bilo je to loše vrijeme za boravak u Kairu, nije bilo pametno biti tamo upravo tada s obzirom na jadne državne odnose između naše nacije i cijele regije, ali ipak sam to učinio jer, u tom razdoblju svog života da mi se ukazao bilo kakav izlaz, ma koliko neznatan i nezgodan, ja bih ... Imao sam problema sa razmišljanjem, dovršavanjem stvari. Riječi kao što su tjeskoba i depresija tada su bile posve prikladne, po tome što nisam imao interesa za stvari koje me inače zanimaju, nisam bio u stanju bez oklijevanja popiti ni čašu mlijeka. Dijagnoza bi sve to učinila manje zanimljivim. Bio sam oženjen, dva puta; bio sam čovjek koji je s prijateljima navršio četrdeset godina; imao sam kućne ljubimce, poslove s ministarstvom vanjskih poslova, ljudi su radili za mene. Godinama nakon toga, negdje u svibnju, zatekao sam se u Egiptu, bez obzira na preporuku moje vlade, s blagim proljevom i posve sam. Tu se osjećala neka nova vrelina, suha i zagušljiva, meni nepoznata. Živio sam samo u vlažnom podneblju - Cincinnati, Hartford - gdje su ljudi koje poznajem sućutni jedni prema drugima. Međutim, preživjeti egipatsku vrelinu bilo je okrepljujuće - život pod tim suncem učinio me lakšim i snažnijim, kao da sam od platine. U nekoliko dana izgubio sam pet kila i osjećao se dobro.....
