Radikalnim pitanjima zaokuplja se cjelokupna kakvoća našega života; to su pitanja bivstvovanja. Često, ona bude velike nade: da će promijeniti svijest, da će iz naše srčike odgnati smrt. Ona posjeduju korjenitu nevinost. Ovaj rad možda uključuje ovakva pitanja. Pišem o nekim piscima koji se predaju šutnji. Ljudi od pera teže nadmašivanju samih sebe u složenoj šutnji. Moderni Orfej svira na liri bez struna. Njegovim se primjerom preobražava priroda, ili se možda time tek otkriva njena predavna punoća. Njegova imaginacija ipak se može pokazati kao teološko oruđe evolucije. Orfej pristaje na komadanje. To je pravi smisao avangarde. Moderna književnost piše budućnost čovječanstva nevidljivim rukopisom. U ovoj knjizi pokušavam izložiti to nevidljivo pismo. To je posebna zadaća i ja ne težim sveobuhvatnosti. Pratim jednu crtu sve dok se ta crta ne oslobodi stiska, sve dok ne iščezne u slutnjama nenačinjene povijesti. Možda će u promjenjivoj svijesti doba moja tema naći nešto čime će obogatiti vlastitu osebujnost. Izabrao sam četiri značajne pojave, Hemingwaya, Kafku, Geneta i Becketta, kao primjere u nekom hijeratskom pokretu beznađa, vladavini praznine.
