Upon his first visit to Slovenia Slovenians joyously welcomed the then Regent and Heir Apparent Alexander Karađorđević as their „nation's ruler". Many have tried to put the mass excitement into verses to express the deep sentiments felt on that occasion. Marija Lamutova versified an association to a beautiful fairytale from ancient times about a prince who saved "an enchanted princess from a dragon's evil spell". To which she added that "this fairytale is today no longer deceiving,/ this fairytale is today truth existing!“ These warm sentiments were to a great extent mutual. The later king of Serbs, Croatians and Slovenians (1921-29) or the king of Yugoslavia (1929-34) reciprocated Slovenians' love for him by regularly visiting Slovenia with his family, especially during winter months. On these visits the royal family, his three sons Peter, Tomislav and Andrej in particular, became enthusiastic about winter sports and alpinism. The one who was most excited about alpine sports was the king's eldest son and heir apparent, and the youngest European king after his father's premature demise, Peter II. As early as 1935 he attempted to ascend the highest peak of Yugoslavia but his plan was thwarted by weather conditions. The young sportsman conquered that peak four years later in the company of his friends and classmates. Božidar Jezernik
