Knjiga "Lica pravosuđa i državna vlast" Mirjana Damaške, nekoć profesora na Pravnom fakultetu Sveučilišta u Zagrebu, a danas Sterling Professora na glasovitom Yale Law School, jedno je od najvažnijih djela prošlog stoljeća u području komparativnoga postupovnog prava. Bitno je utjecala na gledanje i razumijevanje različitih pravnih sustava. Upozorila je na važnost odnosa između društvene kulture i načina na koji određena društva rješavaju sporove. Njezino značenje raste s globalizacijom koja je dala poticaj preuzimanju postupovnih oblika i instituta iz drugih pravnih kultura te harmonizaciji postupovnih pravila. Dajući analitički i istančan uvid u djelovanje različitih kaznenopravnih sustava, ova knjiga, kao i drugi Damaškini radovi utjecala je na oblikovanje međunarodnoga kaznenog sudovanja. U knjizi "Lica pravosuđa i državna vlast" Mirjan Damaška izgrađuje teoretski okvir za komparativnu analizu pravosudnih sustava te postupovnih građanskih i kaznenopravnih instituta, načela i normi. Time nam omogućuje lakše snalaženje i dublje razumijevanje uređenja i ustanova putem kojih djeluje pravosuđe u suvremenim državama. Koristeći se teoretskim okvirom koji je razvio u knjizi i stavljajući ga u različite kontekste, Mirjan Damaška sažeto objašnjava razvoj, uređenje i djelovanje pravosudnih sustava (poglavito američkog, engleskog, njemačkog, francuskog, sovjetskog i kineskog), pojedinih postupovnih instituta kao što je primjerice porota ili pak postupovnih formi poput načina prikupljanja dokaza, mjere u kojoj donositelj odluke kontrolira sudski postupak i slično.
