Početak je 20. stoljeća. U velikome gradu nekoć je svaki zakutak i svako skrovište bilo puno živahnih mišića, no odnedavno je cijukanje zamrlo. Mjesta nekada puna života sada su napuštena. Jedan mali miš, koji je dotada najviše vremena samotno čitao u knjižnici, luta gradom u potrazi za prijateljima. No svi su miševi otišli, otjerale su ih mačke, ptice i, ponajviše, ljudi. Napustili su grad u velikoj žurbi zaboravivši jednog pripadnika svoje vrste. Miš prati tragove svojih prijatelja i planira put u daleku zemlju u koju su se sklonili. No, čini se da su sve prolaze zatvorile neprijateljski nastrojene mačke. Miš jedva uspijeva pobjeći svojim lovcima nakon pokušaja da se sakrije pod palubu velikog preko - oceanskog broda. Bježi u mračne kanale što protežu ispod užurbanoga grada, no tamo susreće strašna leteća stvorenja – šišmiše. Odjednom shvati kako može dospjeti u daleku zemlju. Mora nekako poletjeti. Pravi nacrte i gradi krila pomoću materijala koja je uzeo iz svijeta ljudi. Uskoro ipak otkrije da mu za let treba više od jednog para krila. U nizu pokušaja miš usavršava pravi pravcati zrakoplov i čini se da je sve bliže ostvarenju cilja. No to neće proći nezamijećeno…
