Nakon sto je Herta Müller 1987. uspjela napustiti Rumunjsku i preseliti u Njemacku gdje je vec krajem 80-tih citajuci njezinu zbirku pripovjedaka 'Nizine' otkriva njemacka publika, a u devedesetima postaje jedno od najvaznijih imena na zapadnoeuropskoj knjizevnoj sceni s dva romana 'Remen, prozor, orah i uze' (Herztier, 1994.) i 'Da mi je danas bilo ne susresti sebe' (Heute wär ich mir lieber nicht begegnet, 1997.), te nakon sto u razdoblju iza 2000. objavljuje niz eseja, pjesama s kolazima i proza, 2009. nastaje 'Ljuljacka daha' (Atemschaukel). Taj roman pokazuje da, kako sama Herta Müller kaze, nijedan odlazak nije konacan. U svojim intervjuima istice da je neraskidivo vezana za proslost i iskustvo diktature, strah te sjecanja na djetinjstvo i mladost u skucenoj rumunjskoj provinciji banatskih svaba, koji su nakon pada nacistickog rezima 1945. mahom (sve zene i muskarci izmedu 17 i 45 godina) bili odvedeni u ruske logore kako bi kao pripadnici naroda koji je sve razorio pomogli u obnovi. 'Ljuljacka daha' fikcionalna je autobiografija sedamnaesetogodisnjeg Leopolda Auberga, kojega 1945. odvode u ukrajinski logor. U njoj se visoko artificijelnim jezikom pripovijeda zivot koji pocinje iza nulte tocke egzistencije, u logoru. Leo Augberg koji odlazak u logor dozivljava kao oslobodenje od straha da ce provincijska sredina otkriti njegovu homoseksualnost i ne sluti da bi priznavanje svoje homoseksualnosti u logoru znacilo smrtnu presudu, a jos manje da ce i nakon propacenih strahota u logoru ponovno biti gurnut na rub drustva i biti izopcenik vlastite sredine. Kao i svi prozni tekstovi Herte Müller, i ovaj roman je vrhunsko knjizevno ostvarenje onkraj svakog biografizma, naivnog povijesnog prikaza i tematiziranja politickog autsajderstva. Njegov zgusnut poetski jezik realne situacije uzasa pretvara u snazne univerzalne slike ljudske patnje i snage koju covjek nalazi u rubnim zivotnim situacijama, a koje je u prozi Herte Müller prepoznao i ziri za dodjelu proslogodisnje Nobelove nagrade. (Helen Sinkovic) Herta Müller (1953.) dobitnica je mnogih knjizevnih nagrada: Nagrade Marieluise-Fleisser (1990.), Kleistove nagrade (1994.), medunarodne knjizevne nagrade IMPAC-Dublin (1997.), europske nagrade za knjizevnost ARISTEION (1995.), Nagrade Franz Kafka (1999.), Nagrade Konrad Adenauer (2004.), Nagrade grada Berlina (2005.) i Nobelove nagrade za knjizevnost 2009.
