Osnovno značenje riječi „mantra“ je „magična formula“, „sveta riječ“, „posvećeni slog“ ili „moćan izričaj“ koji ima dubok utjecaj na kvalitetu i dubinu našeg života i svijesti, kako svojom zvučnošću, tako i svojim smislom ili njihovom kombinacijom, a koji ne možemo uvijek logički ili znanstveno objasniti i koji obično nije razumljiv na prvi pogled. Taj „magijski“ aspekt mantre vrlo je bitan, pa će uvijek ostati nešto tajnovito i tajanstveno vezano uz mantre što nitko ne može objasniti, kao što je uostalom neobjašnjiv i sam ljudski jezik, te zvuk ili vibracija kojom ga proizvodimo kako bismo izrazili svoju misao i osjećaj. Velik dio te magije jezika prisutan je u religioznom izričaju, zapisanom ili nezapisanom, pa su drevni Indijci mantrama nazivali sve stihove svojih najstarijih svetih spisa, ili Veda. To su mahom himne bogovima i obredni izričaji koji prate izvođenje različitih obreda, a osobito obredâ žrtvovanja (yajna).
