Čak i u našem postmodernom dobu, razlomljeni narativ i diskontinuiranost Kapitala mnogi potencijalni čitatelji krivo poistovjećuju s bezobličnošću i nerazu-mljivošću. Glavna je svrha moje knjige uvjeriti barem neke od tih čitatelja da ga ponovno pogledaju: svatko tko je voljan prihvatiti se Beethovena, Goye ili Tolstoja trebao bi biti u mogućnosti „naučiti nešto novo" iz čitanja Kapitala - ako ni zbog čega drugoga, onda zato što njegov predmet još upravlja našim životima, Kako se pitao Marshall Berman: kako bi Kapital mogao završiti ako je kapital još uvijek živ? Krajnje je prikladno što Marx nikad nije dovršio svoje remek-djelo. Jedino se prvi svezak pojavio za njegova života, a kasnije su sveske sastavili drugi nakon njegove smrti, temeljene na bilješkama i skicama pronađenima u njegovoj radnoj sobi. Marxovo je djelo nezavršeno - i stoga vitalno - kao što je to i sam kapitalistički sustav. Marx je doista bio jedan od velikih izmučenih divova. Prije nego što pristupimo njegovome remek-djelu, moramo potražiti porijeklo Marxovih muka i njegova nadahnuća.
