Napisana u dva i pol dana 1919., u zatvoru tvrđave Eichstatt, gdje je Toller prvotno bio zatočen kao osuđenik na 5. tamnicu, a zatim dorađivana nešto manje od godine dana, drama Masa-čovjek prvi je put uprizorena u studenome 1920. u nirnberškom Stadttheateru kao zatvorena predstava za predstavnike radničkih sindikata. U režiji Jürgena Fehlinga ostvarila je veliki uspjeh na berlinskoj Volksbühne u rujnu 1921. Kroz sedam postaja drama donosi sukob između pacifističke ideje za postupnim poboljšanjem životnih uvjeta radnika i radikalnoga rješavanja radničkih pitanja revolucionarnim činom, neposrednim sukobom s policijom i vojskom. (…) Njezini pacifistički zagovori tako su slomljeni pred naletom revolucionarnih ideja, a Toller je uspio u temeljnoj nakani da opiše veliku društveno-političku dilemu kroz sudbinu jedne žene: biti mirotvorac i revolucionar u isto vrijeme nije moguće, tj. željeti promijeniti svijet bez neposredne akcije uvijek završava u konfliktu i određenoj mjeri očaja. Želi li se postići promjena u uvjetima neravnopravnih društvenih i političkih odnosa mora se djelovati, a djelovanje - ako je usmjereno na stvarnu promjenu stanja - ne može bez bolnih, najčešće nehumanih posljedica.
