Na rubu ruske divljine zima traje glavninu godine, a snježni zapusi nadvisuju kuće. Ali mladoj Vasji je to dom, gdje u zimskoj noći sjedi uz peć s najmilijima, dok im dadilja priča skaske. O Žar-ptici, o Finistu, o Babi Jagi - i o Morozku, Mrazu, plavookom đavlu zime koji za mrzlih noći dolazi po duše na samrti. Mudrima valja strahovati od njega, a i skrbiti za duhove ognjišta, staje i dvorišta koji štite nastambe ljudi. No Vasjina pomajka ne želi ni čuti za takve običaje: kao kći velikog kneza moskovskog udana protiv svoje volje u daleku Lesnaju Zemlju, Ana se oslanja na novog popa Konstantina, karizmatičnog propovjednika i slikara ikona, u nastojanju da odvrati seljane od starih navada i izvede ih na put bogobojaznosti. Ali kako skrb za domaće duhove jenjava, tako se prijetnja domu povećava; urod podbacuje, drvo u peći brže izgara dok slabije grije, a na rubu šume budi se strašna sila koja bi inače prespavala zimu. Vasja, koja vidi i sluti štošta što ostali ne mogu, mogla bi biti jedina nada selu - ali mlado žensko čeljade u ruskim zemljama XIV. stoljeća ima pred sobom samo dvije mogućnosti: udati se, ili zarediti.
