Nećete ml povjerovati ako vam kažem da je jedna od mojih prvih igračaka bio - miš. Da, miš. I to ne onaj umjetni koji se kreće na oprugu što je prethodno treba na potez pokrenuti. Ne, nikako. Bio je to pravi, živi miš koji se jednog jutra bio uhvatio u veliku stupicu u našoj maloj staroj kući u kojoj sam se, sjećam se, rodio jednog dana... Čini mi se da je to bilo jučer, a možda i jest, ne sjećam se više. Dakle, gdje smo ono stali? Aha, kod miša. Pustio sam ga iz stupice i zatim sam mu svakog dana, krišom, stavljao hranu pokraj rupe u starom podu. Hranio sam ga, a on je dolazio, ako mu se ponuđeno jelo svidjelo. Kasnije ga je hranila mačka, ili tako nekako. Ne sjećam se više kako je to bilo. Znam samo da sam se jednog dana, kasnije, kada sam bio vrlo gladan, sjetio te mačke... Zamislio sam kako jede, jede, jede... Onda sam jednog dana bio vrlo žedan. Zamislio sam mačku kako pije, pije, pije. Tako je nastala ova knjiga u kojoj ćete... Ali to je vaša stvar. Kako sam zamislio onog krokodila, to vam ne mogu reći. Ne biste mi ni povjerovali. Zato ja vama vjerujem - da vam je ovo najdraža, najbolja i najljepša knjiga koju ste ikad pročitali. Ha! Dobrim dijelom svoj i sasvim vaš.
