Tekstove sakupljene u knjizi Na rubovima političkog Jacques Ranciere objavljuje osamdesetih i devedesetih godina prošlog stoljeća. Danas, gotovo trideset godina nakon izlaska najstarijeg teksta, vidimo kako su osnovne Rancierove ideje i dalje svježe. Stoga ova zbirka tekstova nije samo uvodnog karaktera, već u njoj pronalazimo zrelo promišljene ideje o odnosu politike i filozofije. U vrijeme kada Ranciere piše događaju se ogromni lomovi kako u političkom prostoru (pad berlinskog zida), tako i na filozofskoj sceni (habermasova paradigma političkog konsenzusa gubi snagu). Filozofija i politika zahtijevaju nove pristupe i ideje. Pitanje koje postavlja Ranciere glasi: kako misliti ono političko te kako obrazovati politički subjekt, a da se ono političko ne svede na ideju Carla Schmitta po kojem je identifikacija neprijatelja uvjet mogućnosti konstituiranja političke subjektivnosti. Za Ranciera politička subjektivacija događa se samo u činu razgradnje datih identiteta i u građenju identiteta koji pretpostavlja nešto jedva mislivo: nemoguću identifikaciju. Politički prostor se, u Rancijerovoj postavci, ne svodi na policijsku logiku koja nastoji održati poredak konzervirajući identitete, već upravo u identifikacijama koje utvrđeni poredak dovode u pitanje.
