About the Book

Zbigniew Herbert (1924.-1998.), tvorac čuvenog Gospodina Cogita, pripada svakako najpoznatijim pjesničkim imenima druge polovine XX. stoljeća. Sklonost ironiji i metafizički nemir, humor i historiozofska refleksija, herojstvo i visoka osjetljivost, neposredni biološki i društveni kontekst i povijesna perspektiva, sve su to obilježja Herbertove poezije koja je nastajala u periodu od gotovo pola stoljeća, na jeziku koji govori tek nekoliko desetaka milijuna ljudi, a čiji pjesnici, baš kao i Herbert, ipak dopiru do čitateljā s lakoćom premošćujući jezične i kulturne barijere. A danas znamo - i vremenske. Autor se u svom pjesničkom i esejističkom pismu oslanja na antičku tradiciju i simbole mediteranske civilizacije reflektirajući indirektno o moralnim pitanjima i duhovnom stanju suvremenog društva. Ono što pripada njegovoj neposrednoj zbilji i sadašnjem trenutku nikad nije eksplicitno unosio u svoja djela, jer mu je služilo samo kao povod da čovjeka i društvo promatra na široj skali. Nezainteresiran za sve što pripada burzovnim vrijednostima o kojima odlučuju hirovite tržišne sile i čije su očigledna obilježja površnost, ispraznost i prolaznost, pjesnik Herbert opsesivno je zagledan u intrinzične vrijednosti: sućut, ljudskost, pravdu.
