U ljeto 1999. godine Kit i Laura putuju na festival u Cornwallu kako bi promatrali potpunu pomrčinu Sunca. Kit je strastveni lovac na pomrčine, a Laura nikada nije vidjela nijednu. Mladi i zaljubljeni, uvjereni su da je to početak dugog niza zajedničkih pomrčina. Ali u zatišju po povlačenju sjene Laura nabasa na muškarca i ženu. Zna da je vidjela nešto stravično. Muškarac niječe. U pitanju je njegova riječ protiv njezine. Žrtva se doimlje zahvalnom i nakon nekoliko mjeseci pojavljuje im se na kućnome pragu, usamljena i izgubljena. No, kada njezina zahvalnost poprimi izopaćene razmjere, Laura će se zapitati je li povjerovala pogrešnoj osobi.
