Dobitnik Pulitzerove nagrade Steven Millhauser napisao je zbirku crnohumornih priča koje povezuje opsesija opsesijom. "Opasni smijeh" - prozna knjiga godine 2008. po izboru kritičara The New York Timesa - vodi nas u nepoznate svjetove koji nelagodno podsjećaju na onaj u kojem živimo. Trodijelna zbirka započinje eksplozivnim prologom: u "Mačku i mišu" živopisno je dočarana jurnjava vječnih suparnika iz crtanog filma pa se čini da nam se prizori o kojima čitamo upravo odigravaju pred očima - što je značajka Millhauserove virtuozne proze po kojoj je osobito poznat.Prvi dio, "Nestanci", govori o ljudima koji na ovaj ili onaj način prestanu postojati: usamljena žena iščezne bez traga u zaključanoj sobi, srednjoškolac posjećuje labilnu sestru najboljeg prijatelja isključivo u potpunom mraku, tinejdžerska prvakinja u "orgazmičkom smijehu" strada kada njezino društvo počne priređivati jesenje plačne seanse. U prostorima "Nemogućih arhitektura" drugog dijela caruje pretjerivanje: kula izrasta do neba, prozirne kupole nadsvođuju cijele gradove, a kraljev majstor-minijaturist izrađuje tako sićušne predmete da njegov svijet uroni u područje nevidljivog. Na kraju, "Heretičke povijesti" istražuju alternativne rukavce tijeka povijesti kakav poznajemo: malo poznati ilustrator napravi seriju slika specijalnim pigmentom zbog kojeg se čini da prizori oživljuju, ali ga publika odbaci, a slavni izumitelj na tragu je da otkrije haptograf - simulator osjeta dodira - no uspjeh donosi uznemirujuće posljedice.
