Cooper i njegova mlada kći Finch osam go dina žive u izolaciji, u zabačenoj kolibi u šumi na sjeveru Apalačkog gorja. Cooper želi upravo to jer je prisiljen skrivati mnogo toga. Finch dane provodi čitajući knjige i spoznavajući okrutne zakone prirode. No, počinje se odupirati zaštićenom životu koji joj je Cooper stvorio - a njega i dalje proganja bolna istina o onome što je morao učiniti kako bi stigli onamo. Jedini ljudi koji znaju za njih su tajanstveni lokalni samotnjak Scotland i Cooperov stari prijatelj Jake, koji ih svake zime posjeti kako bi im donio hranu i potrepštine. Kad jedne godine Jake ne dođe, pokreće se nezaustavljiva lavina događaja koja otkriva koliko je njihova situacija zapravo nesigurna. Granice njihova sigurna utočišta odjednom nestaju - a kad neznanka doluta u njihovu šumu, Finchina sve veća opsjednutost njome mogla bi ih ugroziti. Nakon što šokantan nestanak zaprijeti uništiti jedini život koji je Finch ikada poznavala, Cooper je prisiljen odlučiti hoće li se i dalje skrivati – ili se napokon suočiti s grijesima svoje prošlosti.
