"Početnici" su originalna verzija zbirke "O čemu govorimo kad govorimo o ljubavi" Raymonda Carvera, jedne od najutjecajnijih knjiga kratke proze 20 stoljeća. Ova je zbirka integralna inačica remek-djela koju je zamalo napola skratio Carverov urednik i mentor Gordon Lish prije prvog objavljivanja 1981., prije nego što će postati jednim od najutjecajnijih djela suvremene književnosti. Carverova preokupacija samom srži svega jednako je primjetna i u ovim duljim verzijama priča. Plešući s ljubavnikom usred ostataka života starijeg muškarca djevojka dočeka prvo upozorenje koliko su pogibeljne zrele godine, i tada osjeti "nepodnošljivu sreću". Muškarac i žena zaključaju se u hotelsku sobu i polagano, bolno priznaju da je veza gotova, dok se na nekom drugom mjestu samotni čovjek na Srednjem zapadu fotografira bez kraja i konca trudeći se pronaći u svijetu iz kojeg je, bar naizgled, u potpunosti nestalo bilo kakvo žarište. Prolazeći sve te višestruke malene tragedije u srži običnosti - jednako toliko i u srži Carverovog opusa - otkrivaju se novi slojevi, nove nijanse, nova značenja. Na mjestima gdje je suradnja Lisha i Carvera tu zbirku srezala do "lingvističke kosti", ove "mesnatije" priče govore dosad neizrečeno, ispunjavajući narativne tišine koje su čitatelje istovremeno i nadahnjivale i pred njih postavljale zagonetku. "Početnici" pitanjima koja otvaraju, mogli bi potaknuti jednu od najvećih kulturoloških rasprava našeg doba.
