Svaka država prinuđena je da se vodi svojim interesima, jer niko drugi to neće činiti umjesto nje. Velike sile ili one koje teže tome, kao akteri na međunarodnoj sceni, koncept nacionalnog interesa sprovode na način da ga subalteralne nacije prepoznaju ujedno kao sopstveni interes. Da li je odnos Rusije i zemalja Zapadnog Balkana, ponajviše Crne Gore, iniciranog kandidata za uspostavljanje ovih odnosa, bila bratska ljubav ili je u pitanju prvorazredna zabluda - pitanje je na koje ova knjiga ima ambiciju da odgovori. Analiza determinanti kao što su geografija, religija, historija, ekonomija i ideologija, koje definišu rusku vanjsku politiku prema ovom regionu, bez uljepšavanja nudi u knjizi uvjerljive dokaze da je vezivno tkivo ovih odnosa bio dominantno interes, ponajviše ruski, iz koga je i Crna Gora imala koristi. Dakle, knjiga argumentovano ruši uvriježenu percepciju da je ugaoni kamen rusko-crnogorskih odnosa bio isključivo finansijski benefit za Crnu Goru. Upravo posthladnoratovski odnosi ovih nacija pokazali su da partnerstvo dviju nacija nesrazmjernih po veličini i snazi ne može imati jednaku raspodjelu koristi među njima, već će velika sila uvijek koristiti podređene nacije u cilju ostvarivanja svojih interesa.
