Godina je 1861. Odrastajući duboko u brdima Japana, Sachi se oduvijek osjećala drukčijom. Svojom je blijedom kožom i skladnim izgledom odudarala od prijateljica i obitelji. Kad joj je bilo svega jedanaest godina princeza prođe kroz njezino selo i odvede je u žensku palaču u veličanstvenom gradu Edu. Ta palača, prepuna spletki i erotskog nadmetanja, udomljuje tri tisuće žena i samo jednog muškarca - mladoga šoguna. Sachi je odabrana da mu bude konkubina. Ali Japan doživljava promjene. Sa zapada su doplovili Crni brodovi sa strancima željnim da Japan pridodaju svojem kolonijalnom carstvu. Izbija građanski rat te Sachi bježi. Pošto je spasi pobunjenički ratnik, ona osjeti kako se u njoj bude dotad neznani osjećaji.
