Dok pljušte strijele i sijevaju sablje, Akra pada u plamenu. Godina je 1291., Zapad gubi taj grad. Posljednji templar započinje s mladim templarskim vitezom, njegovim mentorom i nekolicinom drugih koji bježe brodom i sa sobom odnose tajanstvenu škrinju koju im je na samrti povjerio veliki meštar templarskog reda. Brod netragom nestaje. U današnje vrijeme, na Manhattanu, četiri maskirana jahača, odjeve na kao templarski vitezovi, izlaze iz Central Parka i jašu Petom avenijom, uz stube muzeja umjetnosti Metropolitan, u trenutku svečanog otvorenja izložbe »Blago Vatikana«. Jahači nahrupljuju kroz gomilu i brutalno se obračunavaju sa svakim tko se prepriječi između njih i njihova plijena. Na gala otvorenju je i arheologinja Tess Chavkin, pred čijim očima konjički voda kreće prema jednom predmetu, čudnoj napravi sa zupčanicima. Dok ga uzima s poštovanjem, izgovara neke tajnovite latinske riječi, a onda povede jahače u noć. Nakon prepada, istragu vodi FBI-ev antiteroristički specijalac Sean Reilly. Ubrzo on i Tess bivaju uvučeni u mračnu, skrivenu povijest vitezova križara i prelaze kontinente u potrazi za izgubljenom templarskom tajnom. I ne znajući da se oko njih plete mreža hladnokrvnih ubojica.
