Zbornik sadrži pisane inačice predavanja održanih na 40. seminaru Zagrebačke slavističke škole. U prvom dijelu zbornika nalaze se jezikoslovni tekstovi posvećeni povijesti hrvatskoga jezika (Stjepan Damjanović, Ivo Pranjković, Marko Karamatić, Lada Badurina, Krešimir Mićanović). Tekstovi koje se bave hrvatskom kulturom i književnosti devedesetih godina prošloga stoljeća uvršteni su u drugu cjelinu zbornika (Tvrtko Jakovina, Leo Rafolt, Tvrtko Vuković, Feđa Vukić). Zbornik sadrži i kratku povijest hrvatskih časopisa (Vinko Brešić). U posebnoj su cjelini zbornika, naslovljenoj "Kritička čitanja", prikazi književnoznanstvenih i jezikoslovnih knjiga objavljenih u razdoblju od kolovoza 2010. do kolovoza 2011. (Ivana Drenjančević, Ana Ćavar). Zbornik, koji je važan doprinos domaćoj znanosti o književnosti i jezikoslovlju, svojevrsna je najava ovogodišnjeg 41. hrvatskog seminara za strane slaviste na kojemu će tematski ciklusi predavanja biti posvećeni sintaksi hrvatskoga jezika te književnim i kulturnim zbivanjima u prvom desetljeću 21. stoljeća.
