Ova knjiga obrađuje više od dva tisućljeća povijesti kršćanstva i Crkava, uz podjelu velikoga vremenskog lûka na antičko, srednjovjekovno, moderno te suvremeno doba, zaustavljajući se na nekim temeljnim prekretnicama: od propovijedanja Isusa iz Nazareta do statusa religio licita u vrijeme Konstantina; od temelja kršćanske Europe do širenja katoličanstva po cijelom svijetu; a razmatra i istinske prijelomne točke kao što su Istočni raskol (1054.), Luterova reformacija i susljedni nastanak brojnih konfesija, Francuska revolucija, sekularizacija, totalitarizmi i Drugi vatikanski koncil. Riječ je o prijelaznim trenutcima i promjenama koji čitatelja navode na pitanja o sutrašnjici, kršćanstvu trećega tisućljeća, na uočavanje novih svjetskih poredaka i širenja vjerskog fundamentalizma.
