Drugi i završni dio Slavićeva romana-kronike radnju će odvesti u kasne osamdesete, u vrijeme koje sprema nove kušnje za živopisnu družinu iz središnje Bosne. Jugoslavija broji posljednje dane. Nekome prigoda da uskoči u zadnji vagon vlaka što vodi u novu budućnost, nekome da pokuša ostvariti davnašnje snove, nekome da potone do dna. Na vrata kucaju novi naraštaji. Dojučerašnji junaci potiho ustupaju mjesto vlastitoj djeci. Ali Domovinski rat svakog će staviti na kušnju. Jedan za drugim nižu se ratni prizori, ispripovijedani realistično kao rijetko kad, od Banovine do Velebita, Osijeka i do, naravno, središnje Bosne - priča se raspliće ondje gdje je započela. Izgleda kao da se jedan svijet koji je strpljivo građen u prvom svesku romana sada polako i jednako strpljivo rastače. Hoće li išta ostati na mjestu? Može li išta preživjeti rat? Ima li tu mjesta za ljubav, prijateljstvo, roditeljstvo, hrabrost, političke ideale… ili rat sve zdrobi? Čitatelj će morati prosuditi sam ako se upusti u ugodno hrvanje s ovom opsežnom, ali ipak izuzetnom prozom oblikovanom u maniri grčke tragedije. U čitanju će ga voditi prepoznatljivi politički nekorektan i otvoreno pristran pripovjedač, koji ipak traži susret s drugim i ljudsko lice mnogih neljudskih događaja iz naše neposredne prošlosti. Što nam danas znače devedesete? Ima li se smisla vraćati? Određuju li nas još ikako? Dok se mnogi kanda trude gledati u budućnost, ovaj roman nam progovara da je budućnost uvijek određena prošlošću, koja živi u sadašnjosti.
