Praksa, dugogodišnje radno iskustvo, te rad sa sestrama pripravnicima upozorili su na potrebu stvaranja priručnika namijenjenog medicinskim sestrama u oftalmologiji. Priručnik treba pomoći sestrama pri upoznavanju osnovnih principa rada s oftalmološkim pacijentima. Medicina, a s njom i oftalmologija svakim danom napreduju. Ovaj pisani tekst prikazuje osnove i predstavlja temelj rada svake sestre koja sudjeluje u radu s pacijentima. Nova znanja iz područja oftalmologije potrebno je sestrama približiti na jednostavan i razumljiv način. Rad medicinske sestre možemo podijeliti na poliklinički i stacionarni dio. U polikliničkom dijelu sestre u timskom radu s liječnikom izvode refrakciju, provode vježbe sa slabovidnom i škiljavom djecom, izvode preglede vidnog polja, educiraju o postavljanju leća, izvode preglede na raznim kompjuteriziranim aparatima (liječnici interpretiraju nalaze). Na bolničkom odjelu smješteni su pacijenti koji zahtijevaju boravak duži od 24 sata. Pacijenti prolaze različite terapijske i dijagnostičke postupke u svrhu otkrivanja ili liječenja bolesti. U priručniku je prikazana skrb za oftalmološkog pacijenta kroz proces zdravstvene njege te najčešće sestrinske dijagnoze koje se javljaju kod oftalmoloških pacijenata.
