Rođendanska pisma (Birthday Letters, 1998.) završno su poglavlje bogate spisateljske karijere jednog od najznačajnijih britanskih pjesnika, ne samo svoje generacije - osvrtanje na piščevu vjerojatno emotivno najkompleksniju vezu, onu s američkom pjesnikinjom Sylvijom Plath, koja je završila njezinim samoubojstvom u dobi od samo 30 godina (Hughes je sedam godina bio suprug Plathove, a u tom braku rodilo im se dvoje djece). […] Nakon njezine smrti Hughes godinama nije pisao, a javnost ga je dugo prozivala kao glavnoga krivca za tragičan kraj od mnogih obožavane američke pjesnikinje, koju je napustio zbog druge žene. […] Pred čitateljem se oblikuje dirljiv i književno briljantan zapis veze koja je kao malokoja u cjelokupnoj književnosti nakon Drugog svjetskog rata bila praćena i analizirana od svih i svakoga, a ovom zbirkom kao da je konačno pronašla svoj smiraj, neuljepšan i nimalo idiličan, ali baš zbog toga toliko autentičan i potresan.
