Dr. Owen Whitfield stariji profesor je povijesti na Sveučilištu Oxford koji se prvi put pojavio u romanu Michaela O’Briena Očeva pripovijest. U ovom novom romanu, smještenom u nešto kasnije vremensko razdoblje, dr. Whitfield veseli se sabbaticalu, slobodnoj studijskoj godini, za koju očekuje da će biti godina mira i tišine, vrtlarenja u njegovu malom vrtu i rada na dovršavanju knjige koja već godinama čeka da joj se posveti. Međutim, kako se bliži početak sabbaticala, niz naizglednih slučajnosti dovodi ga u vezu s tajanstvenim osobama iz Rumunjske, uključujući obitelj koja je bila meta nekoliko pokušaja ubojstva nepoznatih moćnika. Dr. Owen putuje u Rumunjsku pružiti podršku toj obitelji, no situacija u kojoj se našao postaje zlokobnija nego što se isprva činilo. Ovo je priča o napetosti između prepuštanja fatalističkom beznađu i prepoznavanja Božje providnosti u povijesnim događajima, makar se činilo da je sve izvan plana. Priča je to i o hrabrosti, nadi i ljubavi koji su nužni za plovidbu kroz zbrku znakova vremena te o pobjedi vjere i razuma nad silama razaranja i uništenja.
