Zašto je Gubec toliko popularan u narodu? U prvom redu zato što je postao politički simbol, zato što je uzet za politički simbol u različitim vremenima, sustavima, koristile su ga različite ideologije, politički pokreti za svoje svrhe, za svoje političke interese. Izlazak ove knjige pada upravo na obljetnicu početka BUne 1573., prije 440 godine. I nadamo se da smo njome uspjeli razbistriti povijesne činjenice od mnoštva stereotipova koji su do danas ostali uvriježeni kao činjenice, a zapravo su još uvijek natruhe političkih i ideoloških manipulacija. Koliko smo u tome uspjeli, procijenit ćete svi vi koji ćete knjigu čitati. Kada danas spomenemo ime Matije Gupca, prva asocijacija jest da je on bio vođa Seljačke bune u Hrvatskoj i Sloveniji 1573. godine. A i do danas je ostao najveći narodni junak u Hrvata. Po njemu nazive nose ulice, trgovi, kulturno-umjetnička društva, škole, podizani su spomenici, biste, jedan od najpoznatijih romana Augusta Šenoe jest "Seljačka buna" s Matijom Gupcem u glavnoj ulozi, Ivo-Lothka-Kalinski skladao je operu "Matija Gubec", i prva hrvatska rock opera jest o njemu ("Gubec-beg"), sliku o njemu napravio je veliki hrvatski slikar Oton Iveković, izdavane su poštanske marke s njegovim likom.
