Godina je 1929., a tek vjenčani mladenci, George i Serena Pemberton, putuju iz Bostona u planine Sjeverne Karoline kako bi ondje stvorili šumarsko carstvo. Dok je George u tamošnjoj šumarskoj bazi već živio, i to dovoljno dugo da postane ocem izvanbračna djeteta, Serena je nova u tom kraju. Ipak, ona se veoma brzo nameće svojom snažnom osobnošću i ambicijama: preuzima nadgledanje drvosječa, kroti orla koji lovi zmije čegrtuše, samouvjereno donosi odluke, a jednom prigodom spašava i život svome mužu pa postaje jasno da je u toj divljini ravna svakom muškarcu. Zajednički, Serena i George nemilosrdno se obračunavaju sa svakim tko im stoji na putu ostvarenja njihova američkog sna. Beskrupulozno uništavaju i prelijepu prirodu ostavljajući samo pustoš. Postaju nepobjediv tandem - važna im je samo njihova ljubav i uspjeh po svaku cijenu. No kad Serena izgubi nerođeno dijete i sazna da nikad neće moći imati djecu, odluči ubiti sina kojega George ima s drugom ženom. Progonjena mlada majka i dijete počinju borbu za život, a kad Serena posumnja da George tajno štiti i pomaže svoje nezakonito dijete, buran i strastven brak Pembertonovih počinje se raspadati i priča ide k svom šokantnom svršetku.
