Glavni junak Severnog zida jeste veliki pisac Džejms Džojs. I to ne samo sa stanovišta fabulativno-sižejne konstrukcije romana (mada se veliki deo radnje odnosi baš na Džojsov pulski, a delimično i tršćanski žvot), nego i sa stanovišta finog, doista estetizovanog povezivanja sudbina ostalih relevantnih likova. Tako je Marta, nerealizovana ljubav velikog pisca, baka bečke pozorišne umetnice Rite (koja, u jednom momentu radi predstavu Džojsovih Izgnanika), dok Rita postaje prijateljica Olge, Beograđanke, emigrantkinje iz raspadajuće Jugoslavije, anglistkinje koja je magistrirala na Uliksu, i čiji je ujak, nekoliko godina nakon Džojsove smrti, bio Martin plaćeni ljubavnik! Rečju, briljantno zaokružena životna drama u kojoj likovi kao u antičkim tragedijama - idu putevima koji su izabrali njih (a ne onima koje su izabrali oni). Kao i u literaturi samog Džejmsa Džojsa, uostalom. S druge strane Velikić se ovim romanom još jednom dokazuje kao istinski srednjoevropski pisac, koji ne samo da poznaje miljee i duh tog kulturnog prostora, nego ume da ih literarizuje u njihovim najizazovnijim vidovima. Bez obzira što neusmnjivo predstavlja eruditnu prozu, Severni zid se čita kao lako i pitko štivo. Sava Damjanov
