Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) ist als Maler weltberühmt für die Üppigkeit seiner Gemälde. Auch als Buchkünstler war er aktiv und schuf Illustrationen, Titelblätter und Verlagssignets. Seine unmittelbar auf den Inhalt der Bücher bezogenen Bilderfindungen sind absolut herausragend, dennoch haben sie bis heute kaum die ihnen gebührende Beachtung gefunden. Der an der Staatlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart konzipierte Katalog stellt nun erstmals alle 58 buchkünstlerischen Arbeiten im Zusammenhang vor. Die Bücher werden bibliographisch erfasst und ausführlich beschrieben, die Titel übersetzt, oft sogar die Auflagenzahlen und die ursprünglichen Verkaufspreise dokumentiert. Außerdem werden unter Angabe weiterführender Literatur die teils komplizierten Bildprogramme der Titelblätter anschaulich erläutert.
