Skrivnosti življenja sestavlja dvoje povesti, ki bi ju z ustaljenimi oznakami najlažje označili kot večerniški oz. domačijski povesti. Kljub temu da sledita usta- ljenim žanrskim zakonitostim, pa z dogajanjem sežeta do sodobnega časa in se ne izogibata niti sodobnim problematikam. V ospredju je, kot lahko že iz naslovov razberemo, iskanje sreče, izrazita značilnost obeh povesti pa razkorak med tradicionalnim, vaškim okoljem na eni in mestnim na drugi strani, pri čemer je sreča bolj naklonjena in lažje dosegljiva tistim, ki vztrajajo v tradicionalnem svetu in pri tradicionalnih vrednotah, to pa tudi zato, ker tisti, ki se odzovejo na velikomestne skušnjave, veliko lažje tudi zapadejo nepremišljenim tveganjem. Srečo si pač, kot že pregovor pravi, kujemo sami, pa ne samo s tem, da najdemo pot preko ovir, ki nam jih postavljata svet in življenje, ampak tudi s tem, da se naučimo, kako se ne spotakniti na plitvinah lastnega značaja. Zanimiv pa je tudi sam pripovedni način, ki s prepletanjem tretjeosebne pripovedi, premega govora in prvoosebnih replik, predvsem pa z zabrisanimi, a vseeno dovolj jasnimi prehodi med različnimi pripovednimi položaji, ustvarja zelo dinamično in privlačno branje.
