Istražujući biljni svijet u surovim predjelima švedskog sjevera, karizmatični kengiški svećenik i botaničar pronalazi zapuštena saamskog dječaka Jussija i uzima ga pod svoje. Postaje mu skrbnikom, uči ga čitati i pisati te ga poučava vjeri. Sredina je 19. stoljeća, vrijeme je duhovnog buđenja, a svećenik je njegov zagovornik. Posvećen iskorjenjivanju alkoholizma u zajednici, on postaje trn u oku mjesnim čelnicima jer im time iz džepa izbija zaradu. No kad u selu nestane mlada sluškinja, pažnja sviju okreće se prema šumi i goropadnom medvjedu u njoj. Lokalni komesar odmah raspisuje nagradu za hvatanje zvijeri, ali svećenik i Jussi tajno pokreću vlastitu istragu jer su na tragu mnogo većoj opasnosti, zlokobno nadvijenoj nad selom. Skuhati medvjeda, svojevrsni skandinavski noir, inspiriran je stvarnom povijesnom ličnošću, pastorom Lastadiusom (1800.–1861.), koji je svojim revolucionarnim djelovanjem obilježio vrijeme i prostor arktičkog sjevera. U djelu koje je oduševilo književnu javnost Niemi maestralno spaja napeti misterij s duhovnošću, društvenim i vjerskim prevratima i filozofskim istraživanjem važnih životnih pitanja, pa nije čudno što su ga mnogi kritičari usporedili s Ecovim nezaboravnim Imenom ruže.
