Roman "Štakorica" je sastavljen od niza pripovjednih radnji, dijaloga između bezimenog pripovjedača u prvom licu i štakorice. Cjelokupno čovječanstvo je zbrisano. Kružeći u svemirskom brodu oko opustjele Zemlje pripovjedač još jednom proživljava propast čovječanstva kroz sudbine različitih ljudi. Jedan od njih je slikar Malskat, krivotvoritelj gotskih fresaka. On se udružuje sa šezdesetgodišnjim Oskarom Matzerathom, koji na loše društvene i političke prilike ne skreće više pozornost svojim bubnjem, ovom vremenu primjerenijom video produkcijom, te snima film. Oskar se usto vraća na mjesta svojega djetinjstva, u Danzig - koji je u međuvremenu preimenovan u Gdansk - i u Kašubiju, kako bi ondje slavio rođendan svoje bake. Istodobno Baltikom plovi peteročlana ženska posada navodno zbog mjerenja gustoće meduze, a zapravo na putu prema bajoslovnom gradu Vineti, utopijskom mjestu u kome vlada matrijarhat. Svih pet žena negdašnje pripovjedačeve djevojke, a u daljnjem tijeku romana različite razine pripovijedanja postaju sve zamršenije a jedino što je sasvim jasno jest da se svi likovi nezaustavljivo kreću prema Velikomu prasku.
