Mikroroman "Trans-Atlantik" prvi je put objavljen 1953. godine i u Gombrowiczevoj književnoj biografiji znači izuzetno važan moment. Tim se romanom pisac vraća u književni život poslije gotovo petnaestogodišnjeg izbivanja, uvjetovanog svjetskim ratom i velikim promjenama koje je on izazvao na javnom i osobnom planu. Gombrowicz je te godine proživio u Buenos Airesu, u transatlantskom izbjeglištvu, daleko od Poljske (gdje se čak mislilo i tvrdilo da je mrtav) i izvan poljskoga književnog života. U takvoj egzistencijalnoj i književnoj izolaciji kakva je bila Gombrowiczeva pisci obično reagiraju tekstovima obilježenima "domotožjem", oplakujući svoju bezdomovinsku kob i opijevajući zavičajno gnijezdo kao izgubljeni raj na zemlji. (...) Gombrowicz reagira posve drukčije, u stanovitom smislu suprotno. Poslušan svojoj proturječnoj, prkosno prevrtljivoj naravi, ali i svojoj književnoj strategiji, on na razoran pritisak nostalgije za domovinom odgovara bjesomućnom, negatorskom romanesknom satirom "slatkog nam poljaštva". Već se naslovom tog romana – "Trans-Atlantik" - ﬁksira temeljno pripovjedačevo stajalište: u romanu se na sve "naše", "domaće", "poljsko" gleda s druge strane Velike vode, iz onostrane geografske (i ne samo geografske) udaljenosti, odakle se ne vide narodi, nego ljudi, odakle se ne apostrofira Poljak, nego čovjek - s onom svojom mukom koju je Njegoš iskazao riječima "što je čovjek, a mora biti čovjek".
