Helene Hanff siromašna je spisateljica profinjenog književnog ukusa koja je 1949. napisala prvopismo knjižari Marks & Co. na londonskoj adresi Ulica Charing Cross 84 u potrazi za rijetkim knjigama kojenije uspjela pronaći u New Yorku. Knjige su joj stigle vrlo brzo. Helene, čija potraga za knjigama poslije prve isporuke nije prestala, upustila se u redovito dopisivanje s knjižarom Frankom Doelom i rastopila njegovu englesku suzdržanost svojom toplinom i duhovitošću. S pismima, knjigama i šalama koje su letjele preko oceana razvijalo se prijateljstvo koje će potrajati dvadeset godina. Ulica Charing Cross 84 jedan je od najvećih svjetskih hitova koji je zaobišao hrvatske čitatelje pa ovimizdanjem želimo popraviti taj veliki propust. Ovo je jedan od najznačajnijih romana o knjigama i čitanju ikada napisanih pa stoga i ne čudi da je njegova pouka o važnosti i ljekovitosti literature prepoznata širom svijeta. Prema ovom romanu snimljen je i istoimeni film u kojem su glavne uloge igrali Anne Bancroft (Helene) i Anthony Hopkins (Frank).
