Objavljena 1929. godine pod utjecajem razvoja psihologije kao znanosti, Uspjela podvala ironična je i emotivna priča o samoobmani i nestvarnosti stvarnog svijeta. Ta duhovita i sjetna pripovijest ispituje varljivu granicu između zbilje i samobmane i na duhovit se način hvata s epistemološkim problemom kao ključnim problemom Svevove književne epohe. Protagonist Mario Samigli (što je pseudonim pod kojim je Svevo objavio velik broj članaka u dnevnim novinama Indipendente), pisac razočaran stalnim neuspjesima, uspijeva se trgnuti iz beznađa zahvaljujući iznenadnoj ponudi kojom kompenzira dotadašnja književna razočaranja. Pritom i ne sluti da u književnosti, baš kao ni u zbilji stvari nisu uvijek onakve kakvima se čine. Italo Svevo (1861. - 1928.) talijanski je književnik poznat kao najbolji pripovjedač tzv. tršćanske književnosti. U svojim je romanima (Zenova svijest, Mlada starost, Jedan život) oslikao dekadenciju građanskog čovjeka u kozmopolitskom ambijentu rodnog Trsta. Istančan je tumač dubokih slojeva svijesti, frojdovski interpretator prividno beznačajnih reakcija. Nakon 2. svjetskog rata prihvaćen je kao klasik talijanske književnosti. Evo, ti književnost doživljavaš s istim izrazom lica s kojim gutaš i svoju salicilnu kiselinu. To je doista uvredljivo. Razumno je posvetiti se liječenju, ali ne preko svake mjere. Vlastiti život ne može biti tako važan da bi zbog njegova produljenja vrijedilo sve najplemenitije stvari na ovome svijetu pretvoriti u klistir. - Italo Svevo
