Kako bi se suočila s dijelom problema Europska unija u zadnjih dvadesetak godina putem raznih Strategija i Direktiva potiče obnovljive izvore energije. Krajem 2014. godine Europska komisija proširuje Energetsku strategiju za Europu do 2020. godine (2009/28/EC) te navodi ciljeve i scenarije do 2030. godine, propisivanjem Okvira za klimatske i energetske politike. Navedenim Okvirom predlaže se smanjenje emisija stakleničkih plinova za 40%, povećanje udjela obnovljivih izvora energije od najmanje 27%, kontinuirano poboljšavanje energetske učinkovitosti, te osiguranje konkurentne, pristupačne i sigurne energije. Pod klasifikacijom obnovljivih izvora energije ubraja se i poljoprivredna biomasa dobivena uzgojem brzorastućih kultura za proizvodnju energije. Cilj uzgoja kultura za proizvodnju energije je proizvodnja što veće količine biomase po jedinici površine s ciljem njene pretvorbe u energiju, a jedna od takvih kultura su i trave iz roda Miscanthus sp. Ovaj priručnik opisuje uzgoj, energetsko korištenje te ekonomsku analizu uzgoja miskantusa.
