Biljke su me raznolikošću oblika, boja i mirisa očaravale otkad pamtim. U školi sam naučila da “sve kemijske tvornice svijeta ne rade tako savršeno i precizno kao jedna mala biljka, koju naša noga može bezobzirno gaziti” i da je opstanak života na Zemlji (ciklus dušika, ugljika, kisika i vode) vezan uz biljke. Usto, fascinirala me ambivalentnost biljaka, to što mnoge mogu biti i korisne i štetne, ovisno o tome koliko ih poznajemo. Biljke su postale i predmet mojeg stručnog interesa. Kao dugogodišnji nastavnik Agronomskog fakulteta u Zagrebu (na predmetima Botanika, Korovi, Medonosno bilje i Fitocenologija) osvjedočila sam se da je studentima vrlo teško učiti sistematiku bilja. Nabrajanje znanstvenih, latinsko-grčkih imena biljaka i skupina kojima pripadaju te morfološki podaci, osobito o broju dijelova cvijeta, tipu cvata i ploda, mnogim je studentima krajnje mukotrpno i misle da to nema smisla pamtiti. No, sistematika bilja trebala bi nam pomoći da se upoznamo s raznolikošću biljnog svijeta i da ga tako naučimo koristiti i štititi, osobito rijetke, ugrožene i endemične biljke. Zato sam se prihvatila pisanja knjige u kojoj sam tu sistematiku uzela kao osnovicu za gospodarsko značenje bilja, što je zapravo glavna preokupacija agronoma. Sve što sam saznala o biljkama, desetljećima skupljala po knjigama i bilježila, imala sam potrebu pretočiti u tekst sa željom da to štivo bude zanimljivo i čitatelju korisno. iz Predgovora
