Odmah potom saznao je da njegov najbolji prijatelj Ford Prefect nije besposleni glumac, a ni zemaljac, već izvanzemaljac koji već petnaest godina istražuje naš planet ne bi li napisao članak za novo izdanje galaktički popularnog Vodiča kroz Galaksiju za autostopere, svojevrsne enciklopedije za intergalaktičke putnike. Arthuru Dentu učinilo se da je upravo doživio smak svijeta – previše loših informacija u kratkom vremenu. No kad mu Ford Prefect otkrije da je na pomolu pravi pravcati smak svijeta i da će za trenutak-dva Zemlja biti razrušena zbog gradnje hipersvemirske ekspresne obilaznice kroz Sunčev sustav, Arthuru Dentu ne preostane ništa drugo nego s prijateljem izvanzemaljcem otputovati u crnu ozvjezdanu prazninu...
