Mirbeauov roman Vrt muka, objavljen u jeku afere Dreyfus, predstavlja alegoriju o licemjerju europske civilizacije kojom upravlja zakon ubojstva i u kojoj su pojedinci, žrtve takva zakona, osuđeni na tragičan završetak. Roman odražava i Mirbeauovu osudu krvavoga engleskoga i francuskog kolonijalizma koji čitave kontinente pretvara u strašne vrtove muka, a ujedno predstavlja i žestok napad na nakaznu moralnost buržoaskoga kapitalističkog društva i države. Autorovo kršenje pravila mimetizma i odbacivanje romanesknih konvencija otvaraju pitanje žanrovske pripadnosti i moralne poruke djela, a i današnjem čitatelju nude užitak avangardnog očuđenja i šoka. Octave Mirbeau (1848. - 1917.) francuski je romanopisac, komediograf, kritičar i novinar. U prozi je naturalist, a u kritikama podupire impresioniste. U svojim djelima oštricu pera usmjeruje prema moralnoj izopačenosti, licemjerju i nepravdi, kao i građanskim konvencijama u Francuskoj na prijelazu iz devetnaestoga u dvadeseto stoljeće. Zbog žestine iskaza njegova djela poprimaju snagu anarhističkog pamfleta uperenog protiv vojne i crkvene vlasti, kao i protiv izopačenosti građanskog staleža, pa se stoga u njima zrcali novo kritičko ozračje koje nadahnjuje umjetničke i humanističke krugove tog razdoblja. Vrt muka! Strasti, apetiti, interesi, mržnje i laži, i zakoni, društvene institucije, pravda, ljubav, slava, junaštvo i religije - to su njegovi monstruozni cvjetovi i njegovi odvratni instrumenti vječite ljudske patnje. To što sam danas vidio i čuo, postoji i plače i jauče izvan ovog vrta, koji je za mene samo simbol, na cijelom planetu. - Octave Mirbeau
