Pred samu zoru dvoje se djece spuštalo niz skliske, kamene stepenice. Bili su još topli od sna, odjeveni u meke noćne košulje, dok im se zapletena kosa spuštala niz leđa. Dječak i djevojčica. Stribor i Lada. Striboru je trinaest godina, tek je nekoliko mjeseci stariji od Lade. Nisu oni brat i sestra, nisu čak ni rođaci, već prijatelji iz istog ulaza u stambenu zgradu, Držićeva 18. Možda oni i ne bi bili tako dobri prijatelji da nisu osamljeni u toj već pomalo oronuloj kući u kojoj pretežno žive starci, nečiji bake i djedovi, pomalo zaboravljeni od vlastite djece koju su životne vode odnijele svojim nepredvidivim brzacima. Lada, kao i Stribor ima dugu plavu kosu, što za djevojčice nije čudno, ali za dječake pomalo i jest. Kosa im je glatka, svilenkasta i poput paperja. Oči plave, kao ljetno nebo. Sliče oni kao jaje jajetu, no prije bi se reklo da im roditelji potječu od drevnih Vikinga, a ne ovdašnjih ljudi, crnomanjastih, vatrenih očiju...
