O britanskom kolonijalnom pothvatu u Indiji uglavnom se piše iz perspektive muške povijesti osvajanja i vladanja, no dio tog pothvata gotovo od početka bile su i kolonijalne žene. Knijga Biljane Romić, napisana na temelju višegodišnjeg proučavanja dnevnika i pisama Engleskinja koje su boravile u Indiji, približava čitatelju živote i glasove tih žena. Odlazile su u veliko nepoznato, često nepripremljene za nedaće drugog podneblja i društvene uloge u kojima će se naći. Odlazile su kao supruge, guvernante, učiteljice, kao mlade žene u potrazi za bračnim partnerima; ponekad kao poduzetnice, misionarke, avanturistice. Mnoge nisu izlazile iz okvire koje im je zadala britanska kolonijalna zajednica, no neke su pokazale i da je moguće prevladati ograničenja vlastitog vremena, klase i spola u odnosu prema Indiji i Indijcima. Opsežno citirajući njihove zapise, autorica ove knjige govori o takozvanoj “maloj povijesti”, onj koja nastaje na marginama velikih povijesnih događanja, ali je bez nje nemoguće stvoriti potpuniju sliku prošlosti.
