Ez a könyv a Bosznia-Hercegovinában élő horvát katolikus nők hagyományos tetoválásának egyedülálló jelenségét mutatja be, különösen Közép-Boszniában, ahol ez néprajzi ritkaságnak számít, és egyedülálló az egész világon. A katolikus nők hagyományos tetoválásának az oszmán uralom idején, 1463 és 1878 között volt a legnagyobb jelentősége, amikor a nők kezére történő kereszttetoválás, mint a kereszténység szimbóluma, elsősorban védelmi funkciót töltött be (megakadályozta a rabszolgaságba, hárembe való elhurcolást, megelőzte a megerőszakolást). Az a kis jel a bőrön annyira fontos volt akkoriban, hogy meghatározta az emberek sorsát. A katolikus nők kéztetoválásának szokása az oszmánok távozása után is megmaradt, majd a visszatartó, védő jellege már rituális-szokásos jellegé változott, vagyis a Bosznia-Hercegovina déli részén élő nők identitásának jelképévé vált, főleg Ráma környékén, így a nők továbbra is tetováltatták magukat. A szokás az 1960-as évek végéig volt aktuális, azóta kihalófélben van. A horvát hagyományos tetoválás felvétele az emberiség szellemi kulturális örökségének UNESCO listájára nagyban hozzájárulna ennek a ritka etnológiai sajátosságnak a megőrzéséhez, népszerűsítéséhez és elismeréséhez.
