Nad sumornim gradom spuštao se topao proljetni sumrak, kad sam teška srca odlučio pogledati što je s knjižarom. Prepustio sam se sjećanjima i stigao do mjesta na kojem se trebala nalaziti. Ali tamo ne samo da nije bilo nikakve knjižare već je nitko od prolaznika koje sam zaustavio nije poznavao. Na njenom mjestu nalazio se bordel, star i oronuo, kao da u toj ni po čemu posebnoj zgradi osim njega nikad ničeg nije ni bilo. Na pločniku su već stajali prvi golišavi anđeli noći, pozivajući me svojim dubokim, hrapavim glasovima da uđem i potrošim poneki franak na čari drevnog zanata, jedna dama malčice je podsjećala na Evu, ali ja je svejedno nisam želio osloviti. Prvim zrakoplovom napustio sam grad u kojem sam se jedne olujne jesenje noći uvjerio da postoje zle knjige. Baš kao i zle riječi, l mjesto s kojeg je sve zlo poteklo, duboko u utrobi zemlje. Crne zemlje.
