Malo misto pisac je smjestio na neimenovani otok u blizini Splita, koji nije ni Šolta ni Brač, iako bi mogao biti i jedan i drugi. A mogao bi biti i sasvim treći, daleko od našega mora, a bliži nekim drugim sredozemnim obalama. Premda je napisao priču do srži natopljenu osebujnim lokalnim bojama i mirisima, Miljenko Smoje uspio je stvoriti svijet otvoren posvajanjima, u kojemu će svaki Mediteranac razabrati ponešto od svog iskustva. A oni koji se takvima ne mogu zvati, jer su rođeni odnosno žive sjevernije od sunčanih obala, u toj će insularnoj zajednici napučenoj živopisnim karakterima razabrati dovoljno razloga da dovijeka žale što su na životnoj lutriji izvukli krivu kartu, pa se sada pate u nekome sivom predjelu što ga napučuju suzdržani, dosadni, neupadljivi, smrtno ozbiljni ljudi. Bez Kronike o našem Malom mistu ni Dalmacija ne bi bila tako privlačna i lijepa kao što mi vjerujemo da jest. Jer gdje god se zatekli, mi tražimo rijetke sačuvane tragove Smojina svijeta i - što je najljepše - uspješno ih nalazimo. Ivica Ivanišević
